RAID 5E layout
RAID 5E (RAID 5 Enhanced) array is one of the RAID 5 variations. RAID 5E differs from normal RAID 5 in having integrated spare space to rebuild the array immediately when one of the member disks fails. The size of this additional space equals the size of one member disk. Data is written on RAID 5E in the following way:
The main RAID 5E advantage is the performance increase both write and read speeds as compared to RAID 5 with a dedicated hot spare drive. The significant disadvantage is the complexity of rebuild in case of a member disk failure. As of now, RAID 5E can be created only using a standalone controller, say, an IBM ServeRAID controller.
RAID 5E Recovery
For RAID 5E, recovery of array parameters is exactly the same as for a regular RAID 5 (see the detailed instruction on the RAID 5 recovery page). You can recover RAID 5E configuration using ReclaiMe Free RAID Recovery. There will be extra zero-filled space written after the array content in the image file or when the array is written directly to the disk. Typically, this does not have any side effects on recovery.
