Save $100 with the Lumia 1520 and 50% on a flip cover

Thinking about picking up a Nokia Lumia 1520? Well the Microsoft Store has a deal for you.

You can get a $100 bill credit and 50% off the phone’s flip cover. There are some stipulations, however.

First off, you need to be a new AT&T customer. You’ll be getting $100 credit towards your bill payments and not off the phablet itself. The 1520 is $99 for a two-year contract agreement, so you will be getting the handset for free, essentially, if you decide to become a dedicated AT&T customer for 24 months.

The 4G LTE capable Lumia 1520 packs a 6” full HD screen, a 20MP pureview camera, 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage, and a quad-core 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 processor.

If you’re looking to pick one of these up, are in the US, and don’t mind shacking up with AT&T, hit the source link below.

Nokia challenges Sony to a #Cameraduel

Today Sony UK has tweeted its Xperia Z2 comes with “award-winning camera technology” and just an hour later Nokia UK has challenged itto a #Cameraduel.

Nokia’s picture includes the Finns’ best cameraphone to date – the Lumia 1020, of course.
Sony hasn’t responded to the tweet yet, and it’s unclear if it will do it at all. Once we get our hands on the retail unit of the Xperia Z2 though you bet we’ll do this camera duel anyway.

Earlier today Nokia mocked at Apple for its overpriced 8GB iPhone 5c launch and compared it to the five times cheaper and bestselling Lumia 520. It seems taking jabs on Twitter is a thing these days, but Nokia has been doing it the most for sure.

The Nokia X did not have 1 million pre-orders in China

It looks like the news that the Nokia X achieved 1 million pre-orders in China is false.

RetailerJD.com set up a contest where participants could hit a “pre-order” button for a chance to win a Nokia X. The pre-orders didn't require you to register with the site or put any money down, which is not the norm for China.

This doesn't mean that the sales for the Nokia X will have difficulty reaching this number. The handset will be retailing for $100 unlocked, which is really cheap for a smartphone. Also given the fact that the X is Nokia's first Android smartphone, expect it to sell fairly well.

It doesn't change the fact that the numbers were fudged, or, at best, were misleading.

Nokia's first Android smartphone, the Nokia X has been the talk of the town ever since its introduction at this year's Mobile World Congress. The Nokia X has already gone on sale in countries like India andMalaysia and the device was available for pre-ordering in China.

Nokia has taken to its Weibo account to reveal that the pre-orders for the Nokia X smartphone in China have already reached 1 million in just about 4 days. The Finnish company isn't making any predictions for the overall sales figure in China, but the firm is confident of capturing a fair share of Chinese market with its latest affordable offering.

Nokia X will begin to ship across the country on March 25, so there are still few weeks to go before we get to know the final pre-order figures.

Windows Phone 8 supports 128GB microSD cards

SanDisk has announced the availability of the world’s first 128GB microSD a few weeks ago at the MWC in Barcelona. It is the world’s highest capacity microSDXC card. But is your device even accepting 128GB memory cards?

Well, if you own a WP8-running Nokia Lumia 1520, then you can insert and use such card.

A user from the WP Central forum called NoRomBasic has tested SanDisk’s latest breakthrough – the128GB microSD card – and it was fully compatible with a Nokia Lumia 1520. This means Windows Phone 8 supports cards up to 128GB capacity.

Even though the OS may know how to use such a big microSD card, some smartphone-specific requirements still may apply, so if you have another WP handset make sure you double check before you fork out the cash.

Android-powered Nokia X hits Malaysia for $120

The first Android device from Nokia, the Nokia X, landed with much fanfare at MWC last week. The company is wasting no time in getting it out to customers, as the device has been announced through Malaysian retailer Storekini.com for RM 399 (about $120).

While certainly on the cheap side, the device itself boasts rather meager specifications: a dual-core 1GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 4-inch WVGA display, 3MP fixed focus camera, 4GB of storage and just 512MB of RAM.

Our time with the device revealed a somewhat confusing mashup of Android 4.1, Windows Phone, and even elements from Nokia's Asha lineup. And although it's not able to run Google's Play Store, it does have the ability to sideload Android apps, 75% of which Nokia claims will be able to run without modification.

For our full impressions and hands-ons with the Nokia X, X+, and XL from MWC, go here. Otherwise, follow this link to get the Nokia X in Malaysia with free shipping.

Nokia X available in India today, X+ and XL coming soon

Nokia just announced the availability of its first Android-powered product, the Nokia X, in India. India used to be a stronghold for Nokia but recently cheap Android-powered devices have been growing fast and eating into its share.

The dual-SIM Nokia X is available today at INR 8,600 ($140 / €100) from Nokia's official store. For comparison, a Nokia Lumia 520 – by far the most popular Windows Phone handset – costs INR 7,700.

The Lumia 520 is highly popular for a reason – Androids in its price range are nowhere near its specs. The Nokia X is no monster either but you get the same free offline navigation from HERE Maps.

Nokia X+ is also up on Nokia's India store but it's listed as "coming soon" and there's no price yet. The X+ and the 5" XL model should launch within a couple of months in the country.

Find our more about the Nokia X and its siblings from our MWC hands-on.

Nokia XL hands-on

The Nokia showroom floor at the MWC 2014 is chock full of people eager to see Android running on Nokia hardware. We’ve managed to get cozy with the Nokia XL for a minute and we’re now going to tell you all about it.

The Nokia XL features a 5″ IPS LCD display of WVGA resolution and it’s bad at all even though we’re used to seeing FullHD resolution on this sort of screen sizes.

At €109 it’s a cheap phone to begin with, so we weren’t expecting that much, but the screen’s colors are nice even though contrast isn’t that great. As you’ll see from the live Nokia XL photos below, it gets covered in fingerprint smudges very easily.

As far as the Android experience on the Nokia XL, it’s very fluid and smooth. The phone runs a version of Jelly Bean as far as we could tell, but no one specified which one. The 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 chipset does a good job of opening and running apps as well as switching between them.

Nokia has also included a bunch of its Lumia apps on the XL including its Store, Camera, Mix Radio and HERE Maps. Microsoft’s presence is also felt with the addition of Skype and OneCloud apps. Speaking of which, XL users will get 10GB of free OneCloud storage as well as 1 month free of Skype Premium. Speaking of goodies, Nokia also includes a 4GB microSD card in the XL’s package.

The Nokia XL features a plastic build with an exclusive color, which the X and X+ don’t get – bright orange. It feels very nice to the touch, similar to the Nokia Asha 501 and Lumia 1320.

Nokia XL live photos

At the back of the phone, there’s a 5MP snapper with LED flash. As you can see from the photos, there’s a large physical key below the display, which acts like a Home/back button. The user interface is overly simple, too, with two main screens – the app list screen and the Fastlane UI.

The app list is reminiscent of the home screen of the Windows Phone 8 UI and features app tiles, which can be resized. The larger the tile, the more information it displays. For example, expanding the People’s tile will display your favorite contacts, while the Gallery will display the latest photos you’ve snapped.

Nokia 220 and Asha 230 hands-on

Nokia made the most headlines with the Android-powered X line of devices (X, X+ and XL) but did push the boundaries of affordability with the Nokia 220 and Asha 230. Both feature dual-SIM versions as well.

We got to spend some quality time with the 220 and Asha 230. The 220 starts at an insanely-low €29 while the Asha 230 starts at €45. Both devices we handled at the Mobile World Congress were yellow in color. Jump after the break for the impressions and images.
Nokia Asha 230

The Asha 230 is a full-touch operated device – even the back button is capacitive. There are physical unlock and volume keys too. It has a 2.8″ of the same QVGA (320 x 240) resolution and clocks in at 142 pixels per inch. The Asha 230 includes Nokia’s Glance screen tech, a slap in the face of the Lumia 520, which lacks it. The Nokia 220 has a 2 MP camera on the back.

The plastics used in the Asha 230 feel even lesser in quality compared to the Nokia 220. The Asha 230 is heftier at 89.3 g.

Nokia Asha 230

The screen looks okay at these parameters. Asha’s UI operation is a little stuttery probably due to the lower-end specs.

Nokia Asha 230

The Asha 230 comes with a 1020 mAh battery that’s good for 33 days of stand by time according to Nokia. Talk time over 2G is rated at 11 hours. To complete the tally there’s a 1.3 MP camera on board.
Nokia Asha 220

The Nokia 220 is a non-touch device which focuses on the bare essentials in order to accommodate the €29 price tag. The 220 comes with only 2G connectivity, skipping even Wi-Fi along the way. It does, however, feature preinstalled Twitter and Facebook. The plastic used in the 220 isn’t the best but feels okay to the touch.

Nokia 220

At this price point we can’t really expect miracles, the phone is very thick at 13.2 mm for starters. The UI is fluid enough and the buttons are good and those not enamored with touch-operation will love the full numpad. The 2.4″ QVGA LCD offers an unimpressive 166 ppi but has good colors. The 220 weighs a manageable 83.6 g.

Nokia 220

The Nokia 220 is available starting today while the Asha 230 will hit the first wave of shelves in March.
